Gwen Manthey is a professionally trained conservator of easel paintings, based in Washington, DC. She received her training at the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation, where she was awarded her M.S. and C.A.S. in the conservation of paintings. Her B.A.S. was obtained from the University of Delaware, where she majored in Art Conservation, with a minor in American Material Cultural Studies. In 2023 she was one of only two American conservators selected for the Conserving Canvas: Current Practices Workshop co-organized between the Royal Danish Academy - Insitute of Conservation and Universitat Politècnica de València, Dept. Conservación y Restauración de Bienes Culturales, held in Valencia, Spain, and supported by the Getty Foundation.

Manthey has worked with museums and private conservation studios across the United States, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Whitten & Proctor Fine Art Conservation (Houston, TX), the Corcoran Gallery of Art (D.C.), the Western Center for the Conservation of Fine Art (Denver, CO), the Walters Art Museum (Baltimore, MD), the Amon Carter Museum of American Art (Fort Worth, TX), the Palmer Museum of Art (State College, PA), the Chrysler Museum of Art (Norfolk, VA), the Alaska State Museum (Juneau, AK), the Hermitage Museum and Gardens (Norfolk, VA), the Anchorage Museum (Anchorage, AK), the American Philosophical Society Museum (Philadelphia, PA), and major private collections and Foundations. 

Manthey is a Professional Associate member of the American Institute for the Conservation of Fine Art and Artifacts (AIC). Prior professional service experiences include the Paintings Specialty Group Board of AIC, Director for the Washington Conservation Guild, Program Chair of the Philadelphia Area Conservation Association, board member for the Philadelphia Alliance for Response, and participation with the New England Conservation Association. In 2023, she helped with the Army Monuments Officer’s Training.
